Losing Electricity is my Vietnam

As some of you might remember, I had to go about a week without power after the hurricane last year. It was horrible:

He being Boyfriend, of course. It was dark.
It was cold.

I lost the will to live.
So I came home from work last Thursday, and my street had no power. I had lost power for a moment or two during some thunderstorms, but my neighbors said the power had been out for awhile this time.

Seriously, what is this fuckery.
So I sat down on my futon.

I texted my friends and family and posted on facebook via my iphone.

I thought about all the food that was going bad in my fridge.

I reflected on my life.

I checked my phone.

I kept waiting.

And then, when all hope was lost, the lights came back on!

So yeah. I only lost power for an hour. But it FELT like a really long time and totes gave me hurricane flashbacks. What am I going to do in the fall when the hurricanes come back?!?!

  2. In honour of your bravery, I'd like to award you with a free camping holiday! You'll be staying out in the wilderness with no electricity, no toilets, beavers for toilet paper, and no wine, cheese or ice cream. You're gonna love it!

  3. Ha ha! So funny. I would completely eat all the ice cream and cheese (and drink the wine).

Love the part where your sister likes your status update.

    Wishing you a lovely day.

  4. Ha you're funny Gia. An hour? AN HOUR YOU SAY??!! *snicker* I think you should make a 'Hurricane and Power Cut Emergency Box' for the next time. Gas camping stove, solar chargers and red wine. Which doesn't need chilling.

  5. I feel for you. I lost power for fifteen whole minutes not too long ago and it was the longest fifteen minutes of my life. I don't know what I would've done if it was an hour.

  6. As a frequent hurricane survivor, I can sympathize with the lack of electricity. Moreover, the house where I live has a poor electrical foundation which makes it dangerous for me to leave computers plugged in. In short, ANY storm is a risk for me to lose the internet. *shudders*

  7. Someone really needs to invent powerless power so that we can have power when the power is out. I can't believe no one has come up with that yet.

  8. I experience a simple and common power surge at my house and run straight for the ice cream.

  9. Losing power for even 15 minutes feels like an eternity. I'm hooping we don't have any crazy Amish living weather take place this fall.

  10. We have a crank radio for when the power goes out. It is pretty entertaining during storms with wide power outages to hear people call the radio and complain about the most random shit.

  11. This should be made into a harrowing Lifetime movie.

  12. Haha! My internet (not power... just internet and I still had my phone) went down yesterday for a couple of hours and I was practically fetal, So i feel your pain. xx

  13. No power is painful. Some people simply do not understand the misery of an hour without power. I empathize with you.

  14. Poor baby. You ARE a survivor, kiddo! Maybe you oughta think about getting yourself a generator for when you lose the power for more than a few hours?

  15. It's sad to realize just how many of my favorite things use power, like... well, everything. Losing power feels like being put in time out.

  16. That sucks. I'm glad you didn't completely lose the will to live. We don't have hurricanes, just a shitty neighborhood that loses power all the time. Worse than having no power? Listening to a bunch of neighbors SUPER LOUD generators. In the dark. Bastards.

  17. We had a huge earthquake back in like 1994 in Northridge, California, and the power was out for days. My friend and I drove around to a bunch of Baskin Robbins and asked to help them out by eating ice cream for free. There were no takers. Meanwhile, other people were lining up for water jugs and gas. I just drove home 40 miles on fumes to electricity all over the place.

  18. I know that feeling. I hate going without power for any period of time.

Luckily I have a laptop that can last a few hours (though its effectiveness is mitigated by lack of internet) and a DS with games.
